FIGURATIVE VERSUS ABSTRACTION

FIGURATIVE VERSUS ABSTRACTION

FIGURATIVE VERSUS ABSTRACTION

In this series I painted the subjects in a recognizable figurative way. They are the starting point for the many panels. In these multi-panels the figurative work is combined with one or more abstract works. The abstract paintings enter into a relationship with the figurative work through the use of acquired shapes and / or colors.

For example in the triptych "Girl with the ermine": in the left abstract painting the shape and color of the sleeve comes back, also the round shape of the head and the necklace. In the right painting I have shown the ermine in an unrealistic color. Here I have deliberately opted for a sketchy way of painting to create more distance to the actual shape and house / coat of the animal.
The paintings in this series were all made on the occasion of exhibitions visited by me:
*Van Limburg Brothers: in the Valkhof (Nijmegen) Where the Hours of the Duc van Berry was exhibited. This was possible because the book was restored and therefore (once) the relevant pages could be shown separately.
*Girl with the ermine: following an exhibition by Leonardo da Vince in Rome 2008.
*Portrait of a young girl: following the exhibition of Hans Memling the Groeninge Museum in Bruges 2005.
*Portraits of Chinese warriors: exhibition of the excavations of the grave of X'in, exhibited in Maaseik.
